Why Play your Rugby at Nottingham Moderns?

Welcome to Moderns Rugby Football Club.

It may be your first visit to Wilford but this has been home to the club since the early 70's. Initially formed in 1956 by a bunch of school leavers the club has a great history of achievement and a strong standing in the local rugby community.

Located within a stone's throw of the 'Embankment,' gifted to the city by one Mr Jesse Boot, and just a few tram stops from the centre of the city, we own and occupy a unique spot by the side of the River Trent. A friendly, community club we have strong links with Nottingham RFC, Universities, local businesses and the local community. Whilst our role is to provide an outstanding community rugby facility, we have had our share of representative honours as you will see when you look around at the club memorabilia on show in the clubhouse.

A full club history is provided in a document below. You'll find more recent news in the news and teams sections of this site.

Coaching is provided by experienced, RFU qualified coaches who all have a vested interest in the club as ex-players, Dads, sponsors and practising coaches. Club training night is Tuesday, starting promptly, on the park, at 6:45pm. All are welcome, regardless of experience or ability. We are a friendly bunch, just come along on a Tuesday and introduce yourself to one of the coaches. We'll slot you into a group that’s right for you and get you involved. Please use the email below to contact me if you have any questions.

You can train for three sessions for free, but after that we need to get a little more formal and make sure we have your details for insurance and registration purposes. You can pay membership subscriptions over the bar.

Please complete the application form using the 'join' button on the home page of this site.

The club has a strong social contingent and an active facebook group you can find by simply searching for Nottingham Moderns RFC. We also Pitchero which records player availability and helps invite and record player activity for training and matches. Use the 'join' button on the home page, set up your account then use either the web site or pitchero app to keep up to date.

We look forward to seeing you on the pitch and in the bar!

Testimonials

"I arrived as a fresh faced 19-year-old having seen very little of the world. Moderns, it’s Rugby it’s players it’s coaches and supporters quite literally helped shape who I am today. it was the hard-nosed attitude to training and playing with the amazingly welcoming and friendly environment that has helped me make many life long friends and kept me involved in rugby for life".
Nick Carroll, past player and Coach

"50 years and still counting. I arrived at Moderns in 1970 as part of the “Welsh influx” of newly qualified teachers from Nottingham College of Education. My continued involvement is testament to life-long friendships and a sense of belonging that the club has provided as a player and a volunteer."
Jeff Mapp, past player and club Chairman

"Moderns has the perfect balance of competition and having a laugh with mates. The knowledge of the game from coaches to players is excellent, enabling each player to progress in the game. The culture of the club means I look forward to training every week and am excited to see where the club will be in the future."
Glen Bennett, player

"Twenty Five years on from playing for Moderns RFC my best friends are still my old team mates from the glory days of the mid to late 80’s. If Carlsberg did Rugby it would be like Moderns - a proper rugby club."
David Hargreaves, past player and major fund raiser for the club!

"Moderns quite literally opened up the world to me! Returning to the club in the late '80's with an antipodean accent after playing in NZ and Australia earned me the nickname of Croc, which I still hear around the club occasionally now!"
Steve Mason, past player and Head Coach

“The things which set Moderns apart for me are the variety of people who play at the club, the honest and hard-working mentality of the players and coaches alike, and the development of players from youth level through to seniors. The increasingly integrated nature of the club, with growing bonds between the senior and junior sections, is really exciting and promises great things for the future.”

Nick Halstead, player

"Introduced to the club by Billy Dickson my school teacher as a 15 year old in 1980, I played youth rugby for 2 seasons touring the midlands every Sunday with Strauny and Taff Parry , beers after if we won ! This was the start of a fabulous experience and journey of rugby, friendship and mentoring . Played with an amazing bunch of players and coaches, that enjoyed some trophies along the way . Forty years on I still have many local friends and international relationships which remain linked with this truly inspirational and amazing rugby club."
Ian Grantham, past player and local businessman
